ArchiStories: sitting at my workstation, willing my mind to design a residential building, here comes my brother.
“I can’t wait to employ two Architects so that I can focus on Marketing and Customer relationship”, I said.
“Employ me na” he quickly interjected. “Just teach me how to use AutoCAD”.
“But I mostly use Revit”, I replied.
“No qualms. Just teach me”
“But you will still not be of much use to me. I will have to teach you about building codes, safety regulations, expansion joints in buildings after 25-30metres, window and door placements, grid systems for structural layout, load bearing, and non-load bearing walls, you must be equipped with the knowledge such that I basically need to collect a building design brief from a client and hand it over to you and you handle the building design solution with construction drawings and documents without my interference”.
He stood silent for a moment, walked into the adjacent room, came out, and as he walked past me on his way out, he said “Just tell me to go and study Architecture”.
I laughed.
