Mud Architecture Studies for Sustainable Buildings

Mud house Building model

In my studies on mud architecture for sustainable buildings and affordable homes, I decided to test out some of the materials I could find in the local area where I currently am.

I’m using a mix of laterite, sharp sand, stones and cement for this mud house building model.

Cement is not a natural building material. It is manufactured from a mix of things with lime.

I can’t find lime here, so I am using cement.

I also searched for clay. Couldn’t find any. Laterite + Clay + Stones/Sand is my focus.

The building model in the image is not entirely to scale but I’m using this to observe how each material mix reacts to the environment and the weather.

It’s still rainy season, so it will be a while before I can fully ascertain the strength and level of shrinkage from each mix.

First lesson from experience, to build with mud, never build in rainy season. Use that period to gather all your materials.

Observation Post: African Architecture

African Architecture 1

African Architecture is impressive and futuristic. We got carried away trying to look like our slave masters that we never saw how advanced we were already.

They made us feel what we had was primitive and when we abandoned it to follow their own, they went behind our backs to copy same idea and represent it to us as innovation and we celebrate it.

I saw this picture in a book I’m reading this very afternoon and that’s the laying out of a wall, using hands and it gives the finished look of the 3D printed houses they are showing us today. I once wrote about it.

These were houses built before my grandfather.

I feel perhaps.

Observation Post: Doodle

doodling

I was asked what doodle is. Doodling? The word sounded like cartoon drawing, so I checked ChatGPT for answers. Turns out it’s something I do a lot, especially in boring meetings or lectures. You know those sketches you make absentmindedly on any medium, including those shy moments, using your feet to sketch on the ground … Read more
